Piping tip
A metal or plastic nozzle fitted to a piping bag that shapes frosting into rounds, stars, petals and more.
A piping tip is the small metal or plastic nozzle fitted to the end of a piping bag that shapes frosting as it is squeezed out. Round tips pipe dots, lines and writing, star tips create ridged shells and rosettes, and petal tips flatten the flow into a ribbon shape used for ruffles and flower petals.
The shape and size of the opening controls both the texture and the scale of the decoration, so the same buttercream can look completely different depending only on which tip is fitted. Larger tips move more frosting per squeeze and suit borders or big rosettes, while small tips are used for fine writing and detail work.
Look at tip material and seam quality, since a poorly finished seam can tear a piping bag or leave an uneven line in the frosting. A coupler makes it practical to switch tips mid-project without changing bags. A common mistake is using a tip that is too small for a thick buttercream, which forces excessive pressure and tires out a decorator's hand quickly.
