Coupler

A coupler is a two-part fitting made up of a base that sits inside a piping bag and a ring that screws on over the outside, holding a piping tip in place at the tip of the bag. Its purpose is simple: it lets a decorator swap piping tips mid-project without emptying frosting out of the bag first.

Without a coupler, changing a tip means either committing one bag to one tip for the whole session, or scraping frosting into a fresh bag every time a different shape is needed. A coupler solves that by keeping the bag intact while just the visible tip and its ring change, which saves both frosting and bags on a project using several tip shapes.

Look for a coupler sized to match the piping bag and tip set being used, since standard and Russian tips often need different coupler sizes to seat properly. A common mistake is forgetting to fully tighten the outer ring, which lets frosting leak out around the tip instead of only through it.
