Naked cake
A cake frosted with only a thin, deliberately incomplete layer of buttercream that leaves the layers visible.
A naked cake is frosted with only a thin, deliberately incomplete layer of buttercream, applied more like a light crumb coat than a full final coat, so the cake layers and filling remain visible through gaps in the frosting. It is a finished style in its own right rather than an unfinished stage.
Because so little frosting covers the surface, the look depends heavily on how neat the cake layers themselves are, so leveling and even layer heights matter more here than on a fully frosted cake where imperfections get covered up. Naked cakes are also more exposed to drying out, since less frosting means less of a moisture barrier around the cake.
Look at layer color and filling contrast when planning a naked cake, since the whole point is showing off what is inside. Serve or refrigerate naked cakes closer to the event, since the exposed surface dries faster than a fully coated one. A common mistake is treating the frosting layer too casually, since a naked cake still needs a controlled, even scrape rather than a random smear.
